Stock Trade Basics

Successful stock trading starts with understanding the basics, as is the case with any type of investing. Keeping in mind that pay-off dividends are not guaranteed with ordinary shares. Pay-off of dividends is dependent on the profitability of the company. It also depends on available spare cash by the company. Learning how the company is performing gives the investor an idea of potential returns.

Just as types of shares differ from each other, so do types of dividends. They differ in pay-off in a different period of time. They differ in the potential of higher or lower pay-off. Sometimes, dividends might not be paid at all. This happens during a company’s financial hardship or when a decision is made to reinvest profits into the development of the company.

Again, company performance is a factor in potential dividend pay-offs. How old is the company? What is the company policy about development and expansion? These affect dividends. And, dividends are the key factor in the calculation of a fair share price.
